Step 1:  Read and analyze.

Identify in the article examples of course concepts and theories we’ve learned about so far. Write in no less than 250 words to ensure your analysis is substantial and well expressed. Find TWO examples of textbooks and/or micro-lectures concepts and explain how/why that section is an illustration of course materials. Concepts so far include democratic backsliding, populist authoritarianism, racial authoritarianism, political cultures and resulting policies, power and power laws, elites and in/visible power, and the politics of demographics and demographic change. One tip:  use PEEL paragraph materials to structure writing for social science analysis.

Sample Structure for MINIMAL analysis:

  • One concept illustrated in the article is XYZ. XYZ is….
  • The article explains ABC. ABC is an illustration of XYZ because…
  • Another concept described in the article is XYZ-2. XYZ-2 is….
  • The article explains ABC-2. ABC-2 is an illustration of XYZ-2 because…

Step 2:  Have a Conversation

After you post, respond to TWO posts from your peers and offer a thoughtful response to what you have read in no less than 150 words for each response. Remember that the responses are due three days after your initial post, so there is time to pause, reflect, and respond. Here is a link to guide you in writing a good response.Links to an external site. Good responses still apply concepts and analyze while adding to, challenging, or extending peers’ posts.

The grade for BOTH your post and two responses is based on the extent and quality of analysis through applying course concepts, theories, and vocabulary. One tip:  boldface concepts, theories, and vocabulary to see if you’re applying them! Then check to see if you’ve explained them and connected them to the article.
