A 190 mm thick unreinforced masonry shear wall constructed in running bond with fully grouted cores is 9.0 m in length and 4.5 m high. Assuming a compressive strength (fm’) of 15 MPa and self-weight of 4.2 kPa, what is the allowable shear strength at the base of the wall? How would the shear strength be improved if there was an additional 35 kN/m vertical compressive uniformly distributed load applied at the top of the wall?
