Crimes that result in physical or mental harm to another person can be described as crimes against a person. Crimes against a person typically has steep penalties such as life sentences, ten plus years imprisonment or even death penalty. An example of crime against a person is putting someone in a car against his or her will (kidnapping), a husband hitting his wife or demeaning her repeatedly (domestic violence) or one person being fatally shot by another during an argument (homicide). This type of crime has two categories:
Forms of homicide (first-degree, voluntary manslaughter and vehicular homicide)
Violent crimes (assault and battery, kidnapping and domestic abuse)
Crimes against property is typically the interference of another person’s property. These crimes generally result in the deprivation of a person to enjoy his property, but it can also result in physical or mental harm to a person. Crimes against property fall under the category of theft crimes (robbery, shoplifting or larceny). An example of both is an auto theft scenario where the attacker physically harms the owner of the vehicle (person) before stealing it (property).
