Gifted children deserve to be taught something every day. That may sound rather strange at first; after all, gifted children come to school and sit in a seat in the classroom all day long, but unless a teacher is pre-assessing and developing material to meet the needs of the gifted children, they may sit all day long and learn very little new knowledge. Or they may be pulled inappropriately to serve as a “peer tutor” for a struggling classmate. Again, they are not learning a thing. In our schools, we cannot afford to ignore the needs of the gifted.
Based on your understanding of the text information and any other sources you would like to refer to, please respond to the following questions:
Using Gardner’s model, explain how everyone could or could not have giftedness?
How can we work to achieve balance within Sternberg’s theory of successful intelligence? Which of the three do you see as being the most desirable one?
Where does artistic creativity fit into the school structure?
What are your thoughts on academic acceleration as a practice for gifted students?
How can a teacher enhance instruction for gifted students while simultaneously providing an enriching environment for ALL students?
A one to two page response is adequate. A demonstration of your understanding of the text plus your embedded knowledge of the learning theories as applied to “real world” is the goal of these questions.
