Philosophy Question

Assignment Content

To improve a skill, both practice and feedback are necessary. In this assignment, as well as in assignments in Week 5 and 6, you will practice and demonstrate basic counseling skills through role-play with a classmate.
Your faculty member will provide you with feedback on your strengths and identify areas for improvement, which you can incorporate into future assignments.
In preparation for your role-play, complete the following:

Watch “Body Language and Questioning” (video with transcript). As you watch, think about how you will practice and incorporate the skills in your assignment.

Review the Counseling Skills Rubric. Although your score on this assignment will be based on successful completion of the video and worksheet, this rubric will serve as an outline for faculty feedback to help you prepare for the Wk 6 – Skills Demonstration Video and Worksheet assignment.

  1. Review the Microsoft Teams recording guide and videos in the assignment resources section below for instructions on the recommended way to record your role-play video in Microsoft Teams, and submit it in Blackboard. The resources have been provided in both document and video format, depending on your preference. Note: You are free to use any meeting and recording platform with which you are comfortable, however note that your video should be submitted as an .mp4 file attachment.

Record a 5-minute skills demonstration role-play video with your classmate in which you play the role of counselor, and your partner plays the role of client. Be sure you and your partner state your names and roles at the beginning of the video. In a separate 5-minute skills demonstration video, you will play the role of client while your classmate acts as counselor.
Note: This role-play is not intended to be a real counseling session; rather, it is an opportunity for you and your partner to practice your basic counseling skills. When you are playing the role of client, choose topics that are not real to your life. This is not the space to bring up past traumas, and we do not expect to see movement or change on the part of the client in this session.
Demonstrate the following Week 4 focus skills in your role-play as counselor:

Attending behaviors

Eye contact

Minimal encouragers

Tone of voice

Questioning

After the role-play, watch your video recording and complete the Video Transcription Worksheet to transcribe the conversation line by line, highlight the skills you demonstrated as counselor, and describe how you built rapport with your client.
