PART 1 – Written portion
This assignment asks you to examine the phenomenon of sanctity as expressed in rituals (pilgrimage to the Holy Land and to a saint) and objects (relics and icons).
Based on the medieval sources (the Life of St. Daniel the Stylite, and the Piacenza pilgrim), analyze roles that icons, saints, relics, pilgrimage and icons were granted by the Christian community.
In your essay consider the following question:
How do the medieval authors argue for the holiness of the objects encountered and the necessity/reasons of going on pilgrimage? Provide specific examples from each text and cite passages/page numbers.
PART 2 – Answer the questions below with notes
How is holiness established in the two medieval accounts (i.e. what makes a person holy, an object holy)? Be able to support your argument with specific examples from the texts.
How were relationships between sources of holiness and figures of authority expressed?
Be able to discuss one example from each medieval text, which provided you with a particularly useful insight/understanding of the medieval religious experience.
