Case Study: Freedom
Mark is a banker who has been loyally working at the same company for fifteen years. He is a hard worker with a good attitude who has worked honestly on a day-to-day basis. However, despite his hard work, Mark has been denied promotion after promotion because his boss, Dave, is jealous of his positive attitude. One day, Dave decides to put a pill called Coctyus into Mark’s coffee with the hope of getting Mark angry or sad just for once.
Coctyus is a pill that weakens the conscious control one has over their emotions. It doesn’t make them unconscious, but it simply lessens their control to a decent degree. It turns out that despite outward appearances, Mark has been keeping his anger toward his boss stored internally. A few hours after finishing his coffee, Mark goes over to his boss’ office and strangles him to death.
Questions:
1. Apply aspects of determinism and libertarianism in this case. What aspects could be geared toward one theory over the other in your opinion?
2. According to you, how much responsibility should both individuals, Mark and Dave, have in this tragic case? Spend a couple of sentences to demonstrate your point.
3. Ultimately, what sentence should Mark receive and why? Give reasons to back up your point.
