REFLECTION ESSAY: REMEDIATION PROJECT (Project 4)

REFLECTION ESSAY: REMEDIATION PROJECT (Project 4)
(Grade: 30% of the total grade for Project 4)
Length: 1000-1250 words (4-5 pages, double spacing or 28 pt)

In Project 3, you only have one tool (words) to write an argument narrative but in
Project 4 you have more tools—multimodal—such as color, size, fonts, picture,
music, etc., to express meaning/argument. Through writing the reflection essay,
you need to critically evaluate how writing with only one tool which is common in
academic context different from/similar to writing with many tools or multimodal writing. In
the essay, you need to address the following question:
How might your argument (writer’s intention) change when it is ‘reformatted’ into a
different mode such as remediating a written (uncomfortable) narrative (in Project 3) to
a digital storytelling (as in Project 4)?

Dear Teachers,
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Write your general impression of remediating the uncomfortable narrative (or
narrative, for short) to a digital storytelling. You can address the following
question: (1) Do you like or dislike the process? Which parts of the process
that you like or don’t like? (2) Have you had previous experience creating a
video? What programs did you use and for which course? (3) How many hours
(approximately) did you spend to create the video?
Paragraph 2 & 3: Reflection on Remediation
In two paragraphs, mention two things (one for each paragraph) how the content of narrative
changed when it is remediated from a written-mode (Project 3) to multimodal mode (Project
4). You can compare them in terms of following topics (choose two only):

  1. Storyline/structure: How does the structure of Project 3 and 4 similar/different?
  2. Narrative Details: Did you add more details (emotion words, settings, characters, etc.)
when remediating the narrative to a digital storytelling? What details that you
add/omit? Why? How does these details affect the different audiences of Project 3 and
    4?
  3. Message/content: To what extent, expressing a message in a print-form (words) and a
digital form differ/similar? Which part is similar and which one is different? How does
the content of the narrative in Project 3 different from Project 4? Are there any words
that you repeated more in Project 4 but not in Project 3? Why do you need to repeat
    words/concepts in Project 3 or 4?
  4. Voice/Argument: If you compare the narrative of Project 3 to Project 4, which ones that
you can express your voice better/more convincingly? What makes it easier for you?
  5. Expressing emotions/tone: Which one do you think is easier for you to express feelings?
Project 3? Project 4? Both? Do you think Project 4 has the same tone (e.g. funny, casual,
serious, etc.) as Project 3? Why?
  6. Others? You are welcome to address any other topics when comparing Project 3 to
    Project 4.
In each paragraph, you need to include:
    — one topic sentence illustrating what you have learned when you compare the narrative
    for Projects 3 and 4.
    — At least two specific example(s) taken from both Project 3 and 4.
    — A description and analysis that directly relate to the topic sentence.
    Paragraph 4: Challenges
Describe at least challenges you have encountered when composing Project 4 and how you
    overcame them.
Paragraph 5: Reflection on peer feedback and future action (to be completed after the peer
feedback session on 4/29 and possibly, 5/1).
In the last body paragraph, you are going to reflect on the peer feedback you receive from your
    peers by:
    — Summarize the peer feedback you: Collectively, what did they say about your writing?
Are there anything surprising about the feedback? Cite their feedback to support your
    responses.
    — Reflection: Do you agree with all the feedback? Which one that you agree and disagree
and write reasons for your agreement/disagreement. If you were asked to revise the
digital video, would you include the suggestions from the peer feedback? Which one(s)
    and why?
    — Mention two things you would have done differently if you were asked to make a digital
video again? Support your answers with relevant reasons.
    Closing
End the paragraph by briefly describing what you have learned about remediating Project 3 to
Project 4 and what you hope the reader can get from watching the video.
